World War III
Between 1985 and 1988 the Earth was embroiled in World War III.

In 1985, the United States invaded an ally of the Soviet Union, resulting in an escalation that was eventually referred to as the Third World War. The Soviet Union and the United States both used weapons of mass destruction, shifting the world balance of power.
In 1988, a cataclysmic attack on the United States of America destroyed southern California. The war ended soon after.
