Sub-Zero was an Instructor at the Army Northern Warfare Training Center in Fort Greely, Alaska and a consultant to the Cold Regions Test Center at the same facility. He beat all records on cold weather endurance solely on MEANESS! Before he was tapped to join G.I. Joe, he used his 'deep-freeze' combat tactics in Europe's Operation Chill so that troops would be well prepared if any winter confrontation should erupt.
While most other G.I. Joe arctic specialists like the cold, Sub-Zero hates it. It drives him so far up the wall it brings out a special kind of meanness in him unheard of in the Western world. It’s assumed the only reason he keeps volunteering for cold weather assignments is that he must really like being mean.

Sub-Zero is currently assigned to G.I. Joe's cold weather operations. In 2015, he was put in charge of G.I. Joe operations in Frusenland. When that mission failed he returned to Autobot City.
In 2022, Sub-Zero and his team were reassigned to Thule Air Base in Greenland.
