Dexter Warwick James Sharp was born on November 9, 1934, in East Orange, New Jersey. Colonel Sharp is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he received a first-rate education and training in military strategy and leadership. His journey to West Point began as an enlisted man, using it as a stepping stone to secure an appointment to the prestigious academy. His firsthand experience as an enlisted soldier serving in Korea provided him with a unique perspective and understanding of the challenges faced by soldiers at all levels.

Colonel Sharp's military career continued during the Vietnam War, where he served as a mid-level officer and an Intelligence/MAC-V SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group) agent. His time in Vietnam allowed him to establish personal connections with veterans from Black Operations, including the legendary Joseph Colton, as well as other members who would later join G.I. Joe. His experience as an administrator, mission planner, and strategist in Vietnam further honed his skills, making him a valuable asset to any operation.

In 1982, Colonel Sharp was handpicked by General Flagg to assist in forming a new G.I. Joe team due to his exceptional administrative capabilities, extensive network, and personal acquaintances within the team.
