- Iron Mountain is a human military installation.
The Iron Mountain master defense computer holds a lot of secret military data. Exactly what military data it holds isn't known, but Megatron would love to get his hands on it. It's for this reason that the installation is heavily guarded, with laser emplacements concealed in the surrounding mountains. If that isn't enough, in case of an emergency, a series of heavy metal shields can slam down, protecting the defense computer against attack.
Unfortunately, such technology isn't much use against Transformers.

Once he had had the Insecticons power up at the Nova Power Core, Megatron mounted an attack on Iron Mountain, hoping to gain access to its secrets. The installation's defenses swung into action, blasting the Decepticons with laser fire. However, Shrapnel was able to gain control of them using his control beam, turning the laser guns back on the humans. Even the arrival of the Autobots was not enough to stop Megatron and Soundwave from gaining access to the base's defense computer, and Soundwave began siphoning data from its systems.
Unfortunately for Megatron, the Insecticons had been busy installing cerebro-shells in his men and had taken control of the Decepticon forces. The trio intended to take the data which Soundwave had acquired, however the energy they'd absorbed from the Nova Power Plant was unstable, and threatening to cause them to explode. Though Bombshell and Kickback were cured using a substance whipped up by Ratchet and Wheeljack, Shrapnel channeled lightning through Iron Mountain's structure into himself, preparing to use it to destroy his foes. This only hastened his reaching critical mass, and, though Spike made an heroic attempt to avert it, the resulting explosion destroyed the defense computer.
Hopefully, the humans had backups. Soundwave didn't. The Insecticon Syndrome
