Though the toys were virtually identical to the original Seekers, their animation models were given a distinctive transformation that left the jet nosecone pointing up, hence the nickname. Another change brought to the Coneheads is that their wings don't flip up to appear as part of the upper body, and instead seem to be part of their legs (however Thrust's point upwards while still hinged to his hips). The animation models for the Conehead Seekers were designed by Floro Dery, whereas the season one Seekers were done primarily by Japanese designer Shōhei Kohara. The name "Conehead" is taken from an early "Saturday Night Live" sketch about a pointy-headed family from
France outer space.
The Coneheads arrived on prehistoric Earth during the initial Ark encounter with the Nemesis, but due to staying behind to guard the Nemesis during the Ark invasion, they was not recovered and repaired for almost a year.
In the Shattered Glass universe, the Coneheads served Deathsaurus on Cybertron since the beginning of the war as a member of the Colonel's Mayhem Suppression Squad. Tricked into believing that Alpha Trion truly wanted to bring peace between the Autobots and Decepticons, Ramjet, Dirge, and Thrust received secret upgrades from the Old One, and pledged their loyalty to him and his goals. While less convinced of Trion's trustworthiness than his brothers, Ramjet is willing to go along with the majority in the interest of family unity.
The Coneheads currently serve the new Mayhem Suppression Squad leader Venom.
